Implants have revolutionised dentistry in the last 10 years. A Swedish engineer
(Per-Ingvar Branemark) pioneered them in the 1970\'s. Since the early 1980\'s they
have been used extensively throughout the world to restore missing teeth. Originally
implants were used exclusively to replace dentures in the lower jaw, however now
they are used in situations throughout the mouth.

Dental implants are titanium; tooth root shaped devices, which are inserted into the
area of bone once occupied by the tooth. Over a period of time bone fuses to the
implant surface. This process is called osseointegration. Once achieved it can be
considered that the implant is permanently anchored in the mouth.

Crowns, bridges or dentures can then be connected to the implant so therefore an
